Biography

Stuart Cohen lives in Bedfordshire England, and has also lived for a while in Israel. He is the son of abstract artist and sculptress, Myra Cohen (1923 – 2005) who was  involved in the pioneer stages of art therapy in England. Stuart studied at Harrow School of Art, St Martins School of Art, Exeter Art College and Exeter University. He has studied medieval painting technique and iconography.

He had his first solo exhibition at the Sloane Street gallery London in 1976. Shortly afterwards he was taken up by two of London’s leading galleries, Aberbach and Fischer fine art; but then in a time of deep inner crisis, he destroyed all his work and gave up painting for 9 years, working mainly as a landscape gardener. After what he felt was a divine revelation, he took up painting again, and has worked tirelessly for the last thirty five years, having his first exhibition in Watford Museum in 1990. After this time, he largely gave up trying to have his work shown or exhibited. Several years ago, succumbing to pressure from friends and family he agreed to exhibit again. The result has been some work shown at the Mall Galleries, a very successful solo exhibition in Jerusalem, and a very interesting retrospective exhibition at the Boat House Gallery London in 2015.

ABOUT STUART

Visionary landscapes by the reclusive painter Stuart Cohen – magical mosaics stretch into the canvases. A mystical, and mysterious journey for the prodigal artists pilgimage in paint and pencil. Cohen’s work can open eyes, light, dark, night, and day, through the seasonal – passing into the dawn.
Terry Jones, creative Director & founder of i-D Magasine

I found your work most interesting. I am particularly moved by the great sky over a thin landscape at the bottom of the painting, and like the holy figure in a green and red landscape.
John Miller (1931 – 2002) Landscape painter
